El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, has sparked controversy by firing more than 300 employees of the Ministry of Culture, alleging that they promoted agendas incompatible with his government’s vision.
This mass dismissal took place days after his re-election, marking a significant shift in his administration.
In a message on the social network
“They promote agendas that are not compatible with the vision of this government. In addition, we will save public funds in the process,” the president wrote.
Last week, Bukele named Raúl Castillo, a former teacher, as the new Minister of Culture, who pledged to protect and promote Salvadoran family values.

Changes in the Ministry of Culture
The new Minister of Culture, Raúl Castillo, expressed his commitment to restructuring the ministry to align with the country’s cultural and family values.
“As I promised when you appointed me to this position, my commitment is to the protection and promotion of our values, our culture and the arts. For this reason, the restructuring of the Ministry of Culture cannot be postponed,” declared Castillo on the social network X.
The ambassador of El Salvador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, and the official representative Alexia Rivas also supported Bukele’s measures.
Rivas, referring to the UN’s 2030 agenda that includes gender equality goals, stated: “El Salvador is pro-life, pro-traditional family, and the 2030 agenda has no place.”

Reactions and Consequences
The dismissal of the Ministry of Culture employees occurred shortly after the presentation of a drag play called “Inmoral” at the National Theater was canceled, considering that it showed content inappropriate for Salvadoran families.
Marvin Pleitez, known artistically as LadyDrag, reported that around thirty employees were fired for having initially authorized the work.
President Bukele, in his inauguration message for his second term, asked Salvadorans to accept the “bitter medicine” that his government will apply to improve the economy and other problems of the country.
“People chose a path and we are going to take that path. Bitter medicine,” said Bukele.

Human Rights Criticisms
Miguel Montenegro, coordinator of the NGO Human Rights Commission, criticized the measure, calling it a “wrong policy” that leaves many people unemployed and restricts “freedom of expression” in the “cultural” sphere.
Aranza Santos, of the Alejandría LGTBIQ + Collective, also condemned the decision, pointing it out as another “attack” against the rights of his community.
In February, the Ministry of Education removed the gender perspective from school curricula, a move that was celebrated by conservative groups but criticized by human rights organizations.

This approach, reinforced by Bukele’s recent reelection with 85% of the vote, underscores his commitment to a conservative policy that prioritizes security and traditional values over inclusion and diversity.
The massive dismissal of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele shows his commitment not only to lowering crime rates, but also to combat these terrifying and detestable events for families, children and society in general, disguised as “freedom of expression” or ” culture” as the NGO erroneously describes them.
