President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the significant advances of Mexicana de Aviación, the state airline, which has formalized the purchase of 20 E2 aircraft from the Brazilian company Embraer.
This strategic move seeks to increase its capacity and open new destinations.
The general director of the Airport, Railway, Auxiliary and Related Services Group Olmeca – Maya – Mexica, José Gerardo Vega Rivera, detailed the national and international connectivity plan that includes 11 new destinations: Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, New York , Atlanta, Miami, Havana, Costa Rica, Panama and Bogotá.
These flights will depart from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and are expected to transport more than 3 million passengers per year, generating 1,500 direct and 4,500 indirect jobs in the aeronautical sector.

Latest generation aircraft
The agreement with Embraer, signed on May 7 of this year, stipulates the delivery of five E195 model aircraft in the second quarter of 2025, seven E190 in 2026, and three E190 along with five E195 by 2027.
The E190 will have a configuration of 108 seats, while the E195 will have 132 seats, guaranteeing greater comfort for passengers.

These aircraft incorporate advanced technology, reaching a cruising speed of 963 kilometers per hour and engines that allow savings of 30% in fuel consumption and 35% in maintenance costs.
In addition, its aerodynamic design and the use of lightweight materials contribute to the reduction of operational costs and carbon emissions, reaffirming Mexicana de Aviación’s commitment to environmental protection.

Expansion of destinations and new bases
Mexicana de Aviación’s strategy also includes the opening of two additional bases in Tijuana, Baja California and Tulum, Quintana Roo.
These bases will allow operations to expand to destinations such as Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver in Canada, and Portland in the United States, as well as Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Caracas in Venezuela and Lima in Peru.

In the first 163 days of resuming its services, Mexicana de Aviación has transported 140,762 passengers on 2,990 flights, accumulating 3,762 flight hours and traveling more than two million kilometers.
The average number of daily passengers is 1,025, highlighting the airline’s commitment to offering affordable fares, with an average price per ticket of 860 pesos, compared to the average 1,100 pesos of other airlines.

Economic impact and future of the airline
The total cost of the operation with Embraer amounts to 750 million dollars, of which 39 million have been paid until May 2024.
The investment budget project, registered with the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), covers escalation, import and start-up costs.
Mexicana de Aviación, with highly qualified crews certified under international standards, is positioned as the first operator in Mexico of highly efficient aircraft.
The government of Mexico, headed by President López Obrador, will continue to report on the progress of the airline and other works and actions implemented during his administration.
