The country observes the next steps of its leadership with the challenge of improving the economy. Nayib Bukele Assumes His Second Term in El Salvador.

Nayib Bukele was sworn in this Saturday for a second term as president of El Salvador in a ceremony that took place in front of the National Palace of San Salvador.

In this event, he was given the presidential sash, reaffirming his leadership in the Central American country.

Inauguration Ceremony

At the same ceremony, Félix Ulloa also took office as vice president of El Salvador, both committed to a five-year term.

The event was attended by representatives of high Salvadoran institutions and prominent foreign guests, such as King Felipe VI of Spain and the Argentine president, Javier Milei.

Other dignitaries present included the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani; a delegation from the United States and Donald Trump Jr., son of the former US president.

However, some deputies from the main opposition parties in El Salvador decided not to attend the investiture, arguing that Bukele’s second term violates the Constitution, despite the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice that allowed re-election.

Bukele’s Reelection

Bukele was re-elected in the elections on February 4, obtaining an impressive 84.65% of the votes. His campaign has focused on an intense war against gangs in El Salvador, leading to the imposition of a state of emergency in March 2022.

This state of exception remains in force and has been a key tool in his security strategy.

The success of his security measures is reflected in the arrest of approximately 74 thousand people, the dismantling of gangs and the reduction of homicide rates to historically low levels in Latin America.

However, these achievements have been achieved at the cost of the suspension of fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression and organization.
