The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has launched a strong call to food importers and distributors, urging them to reduce prices that, according to him, have been increased unjustifiably.

In a strong message, Bukele warned these businessmen that if they do not lower prices they will face serious legal problems.

Bukele, who assumed his second presidential term on June 1, despite constitutional restrictions, emphasized his strong stance against food price abuses.

“I hope that tomorrow food will be cheaper than it is now… I hope for lower prices or they will have problems,” declared the president.

Without providing specific details, Bukele assured that several cases of “abuses” have been identified among food importers, wholesalers and marketers, who, according to him, are involved in illicit practices such as tax evasion, bribery, smuggling and false declarations.

Warning to Entrepreneurs

The president compared his warning to importers to his crackdown on gangs in 2019, stressing that his words are no joke.

“Food importers, marketers and distributors, stop abusing. There are increases that are justified, but raising prices double due to a simple rumor is an abuse,” said Bukele.

The food price situation has been a constant concern in El Salvador.

According to local press reports, the basic urban food basket reached $256.56 in May 2024, which represents an increase of 3.51% compared to the same month of the previous year.

In contrast, the rural basic basket showed a decrease, standing at $179.08 in May 2024, compared to $188.84 in the same period in 2023.

The elements that make up the basic food basket include essential products such as bread, corn tortillas, beans, rice, meats, eggs and fruits, enough for a family of approximately four members.

This increase in prices directly affects Salvadoran families, whose minimum wage varies depending on the sector: in commerce and services it is 365 dollars, in maquilas it is 354.36 dollars, and in agriculture it ranges between 243.45 and 272.66. Dollars.

President Bukele stressed that these increases in food prices cannot be justified solely by rumors or speculation.

“We are not going to allow the population to be abused in this way. We will take strong measures to ensure that prices are fair and accessible to all,” he said.
