About the Incident

On April 30, the Government of Mexico presented a complaint to the ICJ, accusing Ecuador of not respecting international law and of showing “deliberate negligence” towards the people who were in the diplomatic compound.

Mexico requested the ICJ to take precautionary measures to guarantee the security of diplomatic facilities and archives in Ecuador, demanding Quito provide protection and security to the assets of the Mexican Embassy.

Ecuador’s Response to the Ruling

Following the resolution of the International Court of Justice, Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry celebrated the unanimous decision that confirmed the unnecessary nature of Mexico’s request.

The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry noted that Mexico’s request was made without taking into account Ecuador’s repeated assurances that it would provide full protection and security to the premises, assets and archives of the Mexican Embassy.

Ecuador reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of international law and the protection of diplomatic missions in its territory, highlighting its willingness to maintain respectful and cooperative diplomatic relations with Mexico and other countries.
