Bullrich hopes to gain insight into the strategies and apply them in Argentina. Minister of Argentina Seeks to Learn about Bukele’s Method.
The Minister of Security of Argentina, Patricia Bullrich, began a four-day visit to El Salvador this Sunday with the aim of learning about the strategy implemented by President Nayib Bukele to combat gangs.
This visit seeks to learn more about the measures that have allowed El Salvador to significantly reduce violence and organized crime in the country.
Bullrich expressed on the social network X her commitment to working together against the criminals who have spread terror in both countries.
During her tour of the Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), a megaprison inaugurated in 2022 with capacity for 40,000 inmates, Bullrich praised the facilities and structure designed to confront gangs in El Salvador.
The Minister of Justice and Public Security of El Salvador, Gustavo Villatoro, accompanied Bullrich on her tour and highlighted that El Salvador is now the “safest country in Latin America.”

Exploring the “Bukele Model”
The Argentine government issued a statement highlighting Bullrich’s interest in the structure that has allowed crime to be significantly reduced in El Salvador.
Previously, this country had been dominated by gang violence. During his stay, Bullrich will meet with President Bukele and other senior security, defense and intelligence officials to better understand the “Bukele Model.”
This model has been implemented under an emergency regime since 2022, allowing arrests without a court order and facing criticism from human rights organizations.

In Search of Solutions
Since the implementation of the emergency regime, more than 80,000 suspected gang members have been arrested.
According to official figures, as of February of this year, 12,500 members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 gangs were imprisoned in the megaprison.

This approach has been questioned by human rights organizations due to the detention of innocent people suffering in prison.
Despite these criticisms, the emergency regime was decreed by Congress at the request of Bukele in response to a wave of violence that left 87 dead between March 25 and 27, 2022.
