In Lerdo, Durango, the birthplace of Mexico’s first president, Guadalupe Victoria, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history.

“Two hundred years have passed since we started our political independence after 300 years of colonial rule, and now it’s the beginning of a new era.

We should all feel very proud that we will have the first female president of the Republic,” the president affirmed.

Continuity of Bienestar Programs

López Obrador led an assembly with residents from La Laguna in Durango and Coahuila, ensuring the continuation of Bienestar Programs during the remainder of his administration and into the incoming administration of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the president-elect.

Both began a tour to supervise projects and social programs in the north of the country.

The president announced that the next federal government will seek agreements with the governments of Durango and Coahuila to implement the IMSS Bienestar program, which offers free and quality medical care.

During the supervision of the Agua Saludable para La Laguna project, López Obrador stated that he would return between July and August to inaugurate this clean and quality drinking water system, ensuring that if any difficulties arise, Claudia Sheinbaum will complete it.

Healthy Water for The Lagoon Project

The General Director of the National Water Commission, Germán Arturo Martínez Santoyo, detailed that this project would benefit 1.6 million inhabitants and 2.1 million in the future.

The goal is to replace water sources from wells with high arsenic concentrations with surface water from the Nazas River, thereby complying with Mexico’s official drinking water standards.

Additionally, the project will help recover the Principal-Region Lagunera aquifer level and increase the ecological flow of the Cañón de Fernández Protected Natural Area.

Agua Saludable para La Laguna began supplying water in December 2023 to Lerdo, Gómez Palacio, and Torreón, with a supply range of 600 to 1,200 liters per second.

Currently, the project is 97% complete in major infrastructure, 63% in main axes, and 82% overall.

The Fourth Transformation Government has invested 13,474 million pesos in this work, of which 10,130 million pesos, or 75%, have already been used.

Call for Unity and Love for Others

López Obrador concluded his message by calling for unity among governments and strengthening love for others, highlighting the contribution of Mexican migrants abroad through remittances that support the national economy.

Claudia Sheinbaum expressed gratitude for the “historic tour” with the president to listen to the people and understand the needs that will be addressed in the next government.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the continuity of the movement for change means maintaining actions benefiting the population, ensuring rights such as access to water, promoted by the Agua Saludable para La Laguna project.

President López Obrador congratulated the fathers of Mexico on their day, accompanied by the governors of Durango and Coahuila, as well as other officials and businessmen.
