Europe has changed significantly since the last elections in 2019. Results of the European Elections Show Far-Right Surge.
The recent elections to the European Parliament have revealed a possible record gain of seats for far-right parties.
If confirmed, this result would represent a serious blow to mainstream politics in Brussels and would create uncertainty about the future direction of Europe.
After three days of voting in the 27 member states of the European Union, an exit poll indicated that far-right parties would win around 150 of the 720 seats in parliament, complicating the formation of majorities necessary to approve laws.

Reaction of European Leaders
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a Sunday speech that the results showed her European People’s Party (EPP), which is expected to win the most seats, could still be an “anchor of stability.”
However, she urged her political allies to work together to protect themselves against extremist parties.

Impact in France and other countries
In France, an exit poll showed that the far-right National Rally party (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, outperformed its competitors.
In response, President Emmanuel Macron dissolved parliament and called for early legislative elections, the first round of which will be on June 30.
Preliminary results indicated that RN won 31.5% of the vote, more than double that of Macron’s Renaissance Party, which came in second place with 15.2%, followed by the Socialists with 14.3%.
In a celebratory speech at RN headquarters, party leader Jordan Bardella declared that “the unprecedented defeat of the current government marks the end of a cycle and the beginning of the post-Macron era.”

A Divided Far-Right?
Although these results will influence the political direction of the EU over the next five years, these national elections are often seen as a referendum on incumbent governments, which could spell trouble for Macron in France’s presidential election in 2027 and for Olaf Scholz in next year’s German federal elections.
Europe has changed significantly since the last parliamentary elections in 2019.
Britain’s departure from the bloc in 2020 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have put much of the continent on alert as they seek to send crucial supplies to Kyiv and bolster their own defenses.
